Bang Bang
April 28th, 2005 by JoshA lot of interesting stuff has been going on politically this week:
- Locally we’ve only got a few weeks left until the May 17th primary election. The lefty Philadelphia blogosphere is abuzz about Seth Williams who’s running for district attorney against the incumbent Lynne Abraham. You may remember LA as the DA who pressed for the death penalty more than any other individual, threw the book at Iverson, and even prosecuted to the fullest extent possible an old man who sadly forgot his granddaughter in the back seat of his car and accidentally allowed her to die of heat stroke. Yes, she’s hard-nosed and tough on crime but Seth Williams would rather be smart. The more I know about him, the more I like him.
- Is it possible that things are looking up for the Democrats? In the first time in quite a while that it seems the Republicans haven’t just steam rolled the minority party, the House voted overwhelmingly to roll back the recently implemented weakening of the ethics rules and return to the old system. The new rules were passed at the beginning of this congressional session ostensibly to prevent partisan witch hunting but in reality to protect the ethically-challenged House Majority leader Tom DeLay. This is an interesting time for congressional politics.
- In a win for those who shrowd themselves in the ridiculous moniker of being “pro-family” (it’s like “supporting the troops” – who the hell isn’t pro-family?) the House passed a bill making it a crime to transport an under-age girl across state lines without parental consent. Thank god we are now protected from secret forced abortions imposed on young women by their evil boyfriends. Though what is a woman to do if her father is the one who raped her? Or her parents are not the ones she can turn to for support? The Senate is expected to pass a similar bill and of course the President will sign it.
Meanwhile, the Sixers are struggling against simply a better team. Tomorrow night is the test if this team can at least steal one game from the reigning champion Detroit Pistons or they should just pack their bags and go home. No matter what happens though, I have high hopes for next season. On the other side of 11th St, the Eagles get universal good grades in the draft and Westbrook’s agent says he will report to training camp sign his 1-year tender.
