With the release of their high quality (well, 96k) stream, I’ve been listening to XPN, the best FM music station in Philadelphia, and my once former place of employ, quite a bit more. The station dropped the pretense of being commercial free a few years ago but the few commercials you do hear are fairly unassuming. One that kept catching my ear this weekend was for singer-songwriter Feist. AllMusic says:

She was born Leslie Feist in Calgary in the mid-’70s but goes by her surname when it comes to making music for a living. The Jhay-inspired songstress got her start playing in a high-school punk band called Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle of the bands contest, Placebo played their first gig opening for the Ramones, and for the next five years, Feist perfected her rock ways.

I’d also noticed her mentioned on Tofu Hut so this morning I gave her album, Let It Die a listen, and let me tell you, I haven’t been so immediately struck by a record in a while. It’s a wonderful combination of beautiful vocals, strong songwriting, and the perfect touches of both lo-fi and lush production. Highly recommended.

Oh, and she’ll be on XPN’s World Cafe on July 25, which you can either listen to then or tune in to the online archive later, now that World Cafe is an official NPR show.
