PEACE OUT LABOR
July 25th, 2005 by PeterSIn a historic move, CNN is reporting that the Teamsters have voted unanimously to withdraw from the AFL-CIO. More details soon…
Both Kos:
While a lack of unity in the labor movement may seem to bode ill for its future, it’s probably the best thing to have happened to it in a long time. The AFL-CIO was bleeding membership and clout and wasn’t prepared to enact the sorts of reforms — heck, any reforms — designed to reverse the trend.
…and Chris Bowers seem to think it’s a good thing:
Unless the labor movement rises, which it clearly has not under the guidance of the AFL-CIO over the past few decades, the future of progressivism, especially in the workplace, is bleak. So while these unions may be splitting, and while this may cause more competition between unions, the value of maintaining the current structure is not in clear to me.
Meanwhile Talking Points Memo Cafe has an entire blog, House of Labor, dedicated to this issue.

unanimously, huh?
I’m a Teamster, and I didn’t vote for this… they really don’t delve into the details of these situations at all in major news reports.
Anyhow, the gamble for organized labor has apparently begun; thanks for the heads up, btw.
