Is Santorum Trying to Lose?

August 1st, 2005 by PeterS

The Philadelphia Daily News did an interesting story on Rick Santorum’s (R-PA) campaign for re-election. Larry Sabato, a University of Virginia professor and expert on presidential politics makes the argument that Santorum may be trying to lose the campaign in order to cement his standing with the national conservative movement.

We are still more than a year out from this crucial election, Santorum has plenty of time to add to his attention-grabbing, out of the mainstream, sometimes hilarious statements. SkaroffBlog will continue to update you on this race and will offer analysis as strategies and campaign tactics emerge.

UPDATE: Santorum Trails Casey by 11 Points—In the race for Senate, a new Strategic Vision poll (R) finds Pennsylvania Treasurer Bob Casey (D) way ahead of Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), 51% to 40%. (thanks to Politicalwire.com for the polling data)

It doesn’t hurt Rick Santorum to say crazy shit right now, because the only people who are paying attention are people like you, me and Larry Sabato. People who already know who they’re going to vote for. Right now he’s just shoring up his appeal to radical nutjobs who want him to go negative on working women, feminists, Gloria Steinem, birth control and womens’ suffrage.
