Santorum’s Plan For Iraq…MORE OF THE SAME
August 10th, 2005 by PeterSRick Santorum, United States Senator from Pennsylvania and resident fanatical right-wing nut-job just doesn’t get it. In fact, the Republican Party just doesn’t get it. They have absolutely lost their footing on reality and they have no plans at all when it comes to the war in Iraq or the a global struggle against violent extremism.
WJAC Channel 6 in PA ran a brief story highlighting Santorum’s comments on the Iraq War.
As violence in Iraq continues, there are mixed messages from Washington about how long troops will be deployed. Support is mixed among Americans. Recent polls show that support for the President’s Iraq policy has started to dip below 40-percent.
Senator Rick Santorum says we have to carry on, although casualties continue to mount. That’s a concern, but the bottom line is that we have to finish this war in a way that would make that sacrifice a worthy sacrifice.
The number of troops from Pennsylvania killed in Iraq is closing in on 90.
Forget the electoral ramifications of the situation and the dwindling public support. Think about the troops who are deployed over there and think about the families who are living in constant fear of losing their sons or daughters. If the Republican Party really supported the troops, then they would make a plan to bring them home. Comments like, “we have to finish this war in a way that would make that sacrifice a worthy sacrifice” just doesn’t cut it anymore.
Where is the leadership…on vacation???

While I understand that Santorum and Bush’s meaningless pronouncements about winning the war aren’t making anyone safer, don’t you think abandoning the mess in Iraq and just bringing the troops home is a little simplistic and Kucinichy?

Absolutely. And that is why democrats (or the opposition) are having trouble getting footing on this issue. We can’t pull out, we can’t ‘cut and run’ as the RNC talking points state. However, we need to set concrete goals and start a troop reduction. We don’t need 150,000+ troops to fight a small (yet very powerful) insurgency.
We also need the truth, although I don’t imagine that is going to come from this administration. The American people are losing faith in the government and in this military action, and that is disastrous because the troops deserve better.
Although I shun the Kucinich way of thinking, I am fed up. I am tired of waking up every morning and hearing about more death and causalities. I’m starting to think that maybe Dennis was/is right. I also have a feeling that as we approach the ’06 and ’08 cycles, you’ll start to hear more moderate (maybe even Republican) candidates advocate the same position. Send the troops home…at this point, it is the only real alternative to ‘more of the same.’ Time will tell…
