And so it Begins

September 12th, 2005 by Josh

The Philadelphia Eagles campaign for the Super Bowl XL title begins tonight. Here in Iggles Nation it is the beginning of an intense, 17 week frenzy of beer, football, and near-ubiquitous E-A-G-L-E-S chants. Led by Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb, with the lethal threats of Terrell Owns and Brian Westbrook behind them, and backed up by the lethal defense of Brian Dawkins, Jeremiah Trotter, Jevon Kearse, Michael Lewis, Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard (and with a dollop of David Akers on top) they plan to return to the Super Bowl and win it all. This is the year it all happens.

The 700 Level predicts the Eagles over the Falcons 27-17. Phillyist picks the Birds to go 13-3 (2 votes) or 12-4 (1 vote) and to win the division either way in 2005. Philly Sports Net is predicting a 15 point win, Eagles 28 – Atlanta 13. Dude From Philly says they win it 34-22. Jim Jenks, the Inquirer sports editor (he’s got a blog so he goes in this paragraph) predicts the Eagles, 23-14. I also like them 27-17.

Over in the professional sports prognosticator world, ESPN has Theisman, Salisbury, Hoge, Eric Allen, and Mike Golic picking Atlanta and Jaworski, Schlereth, and Mortensen on the Birds bandwagon. Locally both Les Bowen and Paul Domowitch also think the Eagles will win, 20-17 and 27-17 respectively. And right now as I watch Around the Horn, Mariotti’s got the Falcons (“too many offseason distractions”) but Bob Ryan likes the Eagles (“TO: 150 yds and 2 TDs”.) Vegas odds have our Philadelphia Eagles favored to win the Lombardi trophy this season and tonight by 1-1.5 points.

Meanwhile the All Spin Zone highlights the Fans Helping Fans Harley Raffle to benefit Eagles fans in emergency need and points out what a huge douchebag Howard Eskin is.

Come 9 pm I’ll be over at Brian’s house, in my black #93 (for away games, green #5 is for home games) with a Lager in my hand. Go Birds. E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!

What happened???? We missed the game because it was on at 2 a.m. here in the UK. All anyone around here has been talking about is that England won The Ashes in cricket. That is a very weird game. See you soon.

Trotter pre-game ejection. 2 missed Akers FGs. Many missed opportunities. 3 McNabb turnovers and a blatantly illegal hit on him. Absolutely no run game (and a seeming refusal to try and run the ball, including no running from Donovan). Gave up 200+ yards on the ground. Poor play from the DEs, special teams. LOTS of penalties. Several dropped balls from TO, LJ. Lack of focus.

Patterson looked good. Dawkins was the savior of the night and the only reason the score wasn’t worse. Vick still can’t throw the ball to anyone but Crumpler.
