Look who’s back
September 19th, 2005 by JakesgNo, not me, well yeah, I haven’t blogged in a while, but I meant Jimmy Carter, everybody’s favorite ex-President.
This is a report I’ve been waiting for a long time. The 2000 and 2004 elections proved disasterous not only for the Democrats, but voting as well. Civic engagement is a topic I’ve blogged here about before, and is still seriously lagging. Carter, former Secretary of State James Baker, and several others have released this report to soon-to-be-ex-President Bush and other members of congress suggesting several reforms to our election system. They include a overhaul to our primary system, that is long overdue.
Read the NY Times article, and if you are interested in more information, email me, I wrote my undergraduate thesis on more reforms, I’ll email it you you. Carter will be speaking today at American University, I will attend, and blog on that afterwords. Click here to read the full report.
There are some great organizations working hands on to change things. Civic Ventures is a progressive think-tank doing something about it. They help sponsor Experience Corps, an outreach organization that is placing older Americans in Public Schools as mentors, helping pass on wisdom to America’s youth. This, my friends, is what America is all about.
