The National Children’s Study
September 30th, 2005 by JoshI don’t normally blog about work here, but this one made it to the paper, so I might as well toot my own horn a little bit (not that I had anything to do with winnning approval for this grant…but still).
The federal government yesterday launched its most ambitious study ever of the health of America’s children, with the plan to follow more than 100,000 from womb to adulthood.

About 1,250 Montgomery County women and their babies will be enrolled in the study, said Jennifer Culhane, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Drexel. She will help direct the study in this region, along with Donald Schwarz, chief of adolescent medicine at Children’s Hospital. The institutions are getting $1 million to plan the study and could receive $13 million over five years for the research, Culhane said.
For all intents and purposes I’m the IT director for the department of Ob/Gyn here at Drexel. It’s remarkable to work for someone who is so good at writing grants and getting new research projects. Sometimes it seems as if a new project comes in every week. I can’t say for sure what my role in this huge 25 year study will be, but I expect to play a major role in managing the computing resources for the Philadelphia portion of this federally funded, potentially $2.7 billion, project. Not bad.
