A Live Music Alert

January 13th, 2006 by Josh

This a Live Music Alert. Please remain calm and get your ass to the closest venue for a live show TONIGHT.

Forgoing the Friday Random Ten this week, I’ll just point you towards local kids in Philly, Marah. Fronted by brothers Dave and Serge Bielanko, Marah creates alt-country blues rock with a gritty Springsteenesque feel. I saw them last month at the TLA and let me tell you, it was a great show. Not to mention they’re also backed by the incredibly sexy harmonies of everyone’s favorite playground doo-wop trio, The Shalitas.

Though they’re frequently called the “best band in rock that no one has ever heard of,” Marah is Nick Hornby’s (of High Fidelity and About a Boy fame) favorite band and Steven King picked their 2005 release If You Didn’t Laugh You’d Cry as his favorite album of the year. Personally I’d go with My Morning Jacket’s Z but if you like one, you’ll like the other. Keep your ears open for these guys. Or call up XPN and ask them to play “Demon Of White Sadness.” Or give the record a listen on Rhapsody (click to play) and head out and buy it a local record shop. Or even better, join us tonight at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ for their show.

Also, rumors are floating around of a spectacular Bonnaroo 2006 headlining group: Tom Petty, Beck, and Radiohead!
