The President says he must ‘go one with life’ which means further ignoring Cindy Sheehan and her band of peaceful protesters:

Bush’s Saturday schedule included an evening Little League Baseball playoff game, a lunch meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a nap, some fishing and some reading. “I think the people want the president to be in a position to make good, crisp decisions and to stay healthy,” he said when asked about bike riding while a grieving mom wanted to speak with him. “And part of my being is to be outside exercising.”

I think Billmon puts it best when he says, “At this point, to call the Commander in Chief detached from reality would be an insult to paranoid schizophrenics everywhere.”

Meanwhile Frank Rich continues to be virtually the only mainstream media columnist willing to tell it how it is to W and his cronies. He addresses the recent attempt to re-brand the war as the “Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism:”

A struggle is what you have with your landlord. When the war’s über-managers start using euphemisms for a conflict this lethal, it’s a clear sign that the battle to keep the Iraq war afloat with the American public is lost.

Finally, Bob Herbert – and last night’s Six Feet Under – make sure that we cannot ignore the human victims of this horrible war.

25,000 civilians have been killed. 1,852 American men and women have died. And there is no end in sight.

I often pause for a moment to consider my hatred of our president, one George W. Bush. I remember the vitriol that spewed from conservatives and Republicans during the travails of the Clinton Administration. People called Clinton a killer and to those of us on the left it sounded purely absurd. Are we just mirroring their discontent at being out of power?

But then I pause again, and remember all that Bush has achieved, and gosh, just how great he is. Billmon:

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Like me, many across this great land are taking lengthy vacations this month, to escape the roasting hot weather made possible by my bold policy of global climate enhancement. However, it has been brought to my attention that a relatively small number of families are not enjoying the summer nearly as much as I am, because their fathers, mothers, brothers, sons and/or daughters have been wounded and/or killed in the War of Heroic Action against Terrorism for the Future of a United Christian Kulture — or, as my NSC counterterrorism experts sometimes call it: WHATtheFUCK?

This is the man who takes a 5 week vacation from the world’s most important day job to clear brush, but cannot take the time to meet with the mother of a soldier who died in his illegal war who stands outside his home, sweating in the Texas sun.

As Maureen Dowd wrote today, “It’s getting harder for the president to hide from the human consequences of his actions.”
