Looking for something new to eat for lunch, and inspired by Feed Me Philly’s review (found via Foobooz, a must-read for Philadelphia foodies) I hopped on my bike this afternoon and rode over to Chinatown to try the new Malaysian restaurant, Banana Leaf. I decided to go with a classic and order the Chow Kueh Teow. Good enough that I’ll definitely be trying it again.

It was such a gorgeous day that I rode over to Franklin Square park instead of heading back to work to eat at my desk. They’ve done some really great work on the park in the past few years and despite it being in the shadow of the Ben Franklin Bridge and wedged between highways and streets, it’s turned into quite a nice little spot. I snapped a shot of my new bike in front of the fountain on the iPhone.

FYI – Instead of emailing this photo directly to Flickr, I synced to iPhoto and then uploaded. For some reason iPhone emails a lower resolution version of your shots and I wanted to see what the 2 MP camera can do in all its glory. Not bad in the sunlight.

So, I just figured out why I am obese.

I love Chipotle. I love it. For my money, there is nothing better than sinking your teeth into a hearty, supple, and deliciously girthy burrito teeming with fresh ingredients (thank you McDonald’s Corporation) and warm barbacoa.

I am apparently rather naive and figured that since my luscious burrito contained vegetables and beans (good source of protein) that I was doing good for my body.

This, however, is not the case. The reason that I am so damn fat is because my obsession with Chipotle and their entire product line.

I just found this website that measures the nutritional content of one’s favorite burrito. Here were the results for mine:

Nutrition Facts
Serving Size: 1 Burrito
Amount Per Serving
Calories 1458 Calories from Fat 549
% DV*
Total Fat 62g
Saturated Fat 21g
Cholesterol 144mg
Sodium 4351mg
Total Carbohydrate 152g
Dietary Fiber 6g
Sugars 9g
Protein 70g
Vitamin A 140%
Vitamin C 105%
Calcium 53%
Iron 30%

I need to cut down considerably on my Chipotle intake. Then, I won’t be so damn fat.

Note: Qdoba, for all you Philly-based burrito lovers, could make you very fat too.

Expecting to spend much of the night tweaking WordPress, reformatting old posts, and trying to come up with some semblance of a unique theme for the site, I decided to try out the new taqueria in the neighborhood. Owned by the same folks who started my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood, Taco Riendo is Las Cazuela’s little brother up the street. The menu is short; consisting of some breakfast dishes, Guisados (mexican stew), sandwiches, and tacos. Per my roommate’s suggestion I had the Chile Relleno tacos with a side of rice and beans. Delicious.

The decor is casual and it’s a BYOB. Riendo is at 1301 N. 5th St, a block north of Girard Ave while Las Cazuelas (which you really must try if you haven’t – it’s excellent) is at 426 Girard Ave. I could eat Mexican food for every meal of the day so I’m thrilled there’s another high quality option in the neighborhood.

Any graphics designers out there have any interest in designing me a banner? I’m looking for something that has both Homer and a little bit of Philly flair. But I don’t really like to talk about my flair.

About a month ago, I had my first poached egg. I don’t know why I’d never had a poached egg before; I think it has something to do with growing up Jewish in New York, where “brunch” is loosely translated as, “what kind of cream cheese do you want on your bagel?” I thoroughly enjoyed my first poached egg and made a note to try it at home – how hard could it be?

Soon after, I saw Clotilde’s post on ratatouille and her recommendation that leftovers be served with a poached egg. I’m sure you know where this is going. I had my mom pick up this egg poacher (discovered on deb’s site) – and before you get all, if she has to have her mom buy things at Crate and Barrel, no wonder she can’t poach an egg, I’d like to point out that (a) there’s no C&B in philly, (b) my mom lives down the street from a C&B, and (c) my inability to buy an egg poacher has nothing to do with my inability to poach an egg! Plus, it’s not like I requested something totally ludicrous, like an asparagus steamer.

I cooked the ratatouille for the requisite hour and a half (a long time for me, though apparently, a much-shortened version of the real thing) and then started on the poaching. And a minute passes. Then two. A poached egg is only supposed to take three minutes and the egg didn’t seem to be poaching much at all. Scratch that – the bottom seemed to be cooked, but wasn’t spreading to the top. I tried again, and again. Finally, after thirty minutes and three eggs the whole thing appears to be cooked. Of course, by that time, I’d gotten so hungry waiting for the egg that I’d already eaten the ratatouille (excellent), some rice, a piece of cheese, three pickles and my roommate’s strawberry poptarts. So I did what any sane person would do.

“Mom? It’s me. I think the egg poacher is defective.”
